GHANA CULTURE FORUM

The Ghana Culture Forum (GCF) is a dynamic umbrella body, uniting practitioners, activists, and organizations in the Ghanaian culture and creative space. As a membership-based civil society consultative forum, GCF is driven by the principles of collective leadership and individual responsibility. With a network rooted in the promotion of cultural foundations for socio-economic development, GCF focuses on boosting the orange economy and fortifying the cultural sector.

Governance Structure

GCF's governance structure is robust, featuring a Functional Executive Committee (FEC), Task Teams, and a National Steering Committee. The FEC, elected every four years, is a 7-member team led by Chairperson Nana Otuo Owoahene. Task Teams cover areas such as Policy & Advocacy, Capacity Building, Research, Outreach, Media, and Resource Mobilization. The National Steering Committee comprises leaders from Task Teams, Domains, and FEC.

Membership Growth

From its humble beginnings with 15 organizations, GCF has expanded significantly, embracing 82 organizations and numerous individual members. Member associations include the Musicians Union of Ghana, Ghana Dance Association, and Ghana Academy of Film and Television Arts, among others.

Key Pillars of Work:

GCF's work is centered around four main pillars: Advocacy, Research, Capacity Development, and Funding. Members align with one of 10 classified domains, including Music, Visual Art, Fashion, and more.

Notable Past Events:

GCF has played instrumental roles in Ghana's ratification of UNESCO Conventions, particularly those for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). GCF's advocacy efforts also contributed to the passing of the Film Act (Act 935), leading to the establishment of the National Film Authority. The organization facilitates events like the Highlife Stakeholders Conference and Ghana Culture Day.

Future Plans and Targets:

GCF plans to address the lack of comprehensive data in the Ghanaian cultural and creative sector by collaborating with partner organizations for an extensive data collection exercise. Advocacy on cultural policies, laws, and relevant issues will continue to be a core focus.
